The only FDA-approved GHRH analog — and one of the fastest-rising search terms in the peptide space. Here's what the published research actually investigates, how it differs from sermorelin and CJC-1295, and a side-by-side of vetted vendors for laboratory sourcing.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic analog of growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH). It is a 44–amino-acid peptide modified with a trans-3-hexenoic acid group that makes it markedly more stable than naturally occurring GHRH, slowing breakdown by the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV). It first reached the market in November 2010 under the brand name Egrifta® (later Egrifta SV®), developed by Theratechnologies and approved by the FDA to reduce excess visceral abdominal fat in people with HIV-associated lipodystrophy.
That approval matters for one reason in particular: tesamorelin is the only GHRH analog with full FDA approval. In a research market full of compounds that have never been near a regulatory file, that gives it an unusually deep, well-documented clinical record to study.
Tesamorelin binds GHRH receptors in the anterior pituitary, prompting the gland to release the body's own growth hormone (GH). Crucially, it does not supply exogenous GH the way injected synthetic HGH does. Instead it amplifies the body's natural, pulsatile GH rhythm, which in turn raises insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) downstream. Researchers studying the GH axis are interested in tesamorelin precisely because it preserves that pulsatility rather than flattening it.
The pivotal clinical program used CT-measured visceral adipose tissue (VAT) as its primary endpoint — a far harder, more specific measure than BMI or waist circumference. A landmark 2010 New England Journal of Medicine trial reported that tesamorelin reduced visceral adipose tissue by roughly 15–18% over 26 weeks versus placebo in subjects with abdominal fat accumulation, alongside changes in IGF-1 and lipid markers. Beyond its original indication, the research literature has explored tesamorelin in the context of:
Search demand for tesamorelin has climbed sharply — reported U.S. search volume grew roughly 49% in six months, from about 90,500 monthly searches in late 2025 to over 135,000 by early 2026. It has moved well beyond its original niche indication into the mainstream peptide conversation around body composition and the GH axis. That surge in interest is exactly why sourcing quality matters: when demand spikes, so does the number of unverified sellers. Verified purity and batch-specific COAs are the whole game here.
Tesamorelin sits in the same family as several other GH-axis research peptides, and the differences are worth understanding:

The compounding landscape for several peptides shifted in 2026, and tesamorelin's status as an FDA-approved drug puts it in a different bucket than research-only compounds. Read our full breakdown: The 2026 FDA Peptide Regulation Update and Is BPC-157 Legal in 2026?

It's studied chiefly as a GHRH analog that stimulates the body's own growth hormone. The most-documented research endpoint is CT-measured visceral (deep abdominal) fat, alongside IGF-1 and metabolic markers. The FDA-approved prescription product (Egrifta SV) is indicated for visceral fat reduction in HIV-associated lipodystrophy.
All three are GHRH analogs that act on the GHRH receptor. Tesamorelin is the only one with full FDA approval and is stabilized against DPP-IV breakdown. Sermorelin is shorter-acting with a long research history; CJC-1295 is studied for more sustained GH-axis signaling. Ipamorelin works through a different receptor entirely.
The prescription version (Egrifta SV) is an FDA-approved medication dispensed by clinicians. The research-peptide market sells tesamorelin strictly for laboratory research use only — not for human consumption. Always verify a vendor's batch-specific COAs and sourcing. See our 2026 regulation update.
Demand batch-specific third-party COAs (HPLC for purity plus mass spec for identity), transparent testing, U.S. sourcing, and a verifiable reputation. With search demand spiking, purity verification matters more than ever. Our vendor comparison checks all of these.
