A growing body of research studies peptides for cognition, memory, and neuroprotection. Here's an honest, plain-English map of the compounds that dominate that conversation — what the evidence actually shows, and how to source them responsibly.
Most cognitive peptide research clusters around neurotrophic signaling — especially Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and related pathways that govern neuroplasticity and synapse formation. Three compounds come up most often, and they work through notably different mechanisms.
Semax — a synthetic heptapeptide (an ACTH(4-7) analogue) developed in Russia. Research suggests it upregulates BDNF and NGF expression and is studied for neuroplasticity, memory consolidation, and neuroprotection in stroke and cognitive-decline models. Most of its human data comes from the Russian Federation.
Selank — a synthetic tuftsin analogue studied primarily for anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, with secondary interest in memory-under-stress. Research points to GABAergic modulation and BDNF involvement.
Dihexa — derived from angiotensin IV research and studied for synaptogenesis via the hepatocyte growth factor / c-Met pathway — a mechanism distinct from the BDNF route. Important honesty note: Dihexa's evidence is almost entirely from rodent models; it has no published human clinical trials, and a clinical derivative (fosgonimeton) failed its Alzheimer's endpoints in 2024.
