How to Read a Peptide COA

The one skill that separates a legitimate vendor from a scam — read line by line, in plain English.

What a COA is — and why it's everything

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is laboratory documentation confirming a compound's identity and purity for one specific batch. In a market with no central regulator of quality, it is the single best signal that a research material is actually what the label claims — and the first thing you should ask any vendor for. The key word is "batch." A COA only matters if it's tied to the exact batch you're buying. A generic, undated, or recycled certificate tells you almost nothing about the vial in front of you.

Reading a COA, line by line

A complete, credible COA contains all of the following. Missing pieces are where trouble hides.

Compound name & sequence

The peptide's name and amino-acid sequence. This is the "what" — it should match exactly what you're ordering.

Batch / lot number

A unique identifier for this specific production run. It must match the number on the vial. If the COA's lot number and the product don't line up, the document doesn't describe what you're holding.

Purity — usually by RP-HPLC

Reported as a percentage, most often via reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Research-grade material is commonly ≥98%, with premium sources reporting 99%+. Crucially, a serious COA includes the actual chromatogram image, not just a headline number — the graph is the evidence behind the percentage.

Identity — by mass spectrometry (MS)

Mass spec confirms the molecule's weight matches the claimed peptide. Purity tells you how much; identity tells you it's actually the right compound. A strong COA shows both.

Analysis date

When the testing was done. Old COAs don't represent current batches — look for a date within roughly the last two years, ideally matching the batch's production.

The issuing lab & its credentials

The name of the testing laboratory. For real independence this should be a third-party lab, not the vendor's own bench — and one you can find and verify on its own website.

How to spot a fake COA

Fabricated and recycled certificates are common. These are the tells:

The verification move that catches most fakes: take the testing lab's name and search it independently. A legitimate lab has its own website and a real presence. Better still, confirm the COA directly on the lab's own server — a genuine one can be verified there, a forged one can't.

Purity isn't the whole story

A COA answers two of the four quality questions — purity (HPLC) and identity (mass spec). Two more matter that HPLC and MS simply can't detect:
